As of yesterday we listed our antique home for sale! It’s a lovely place. It’s a sweet center chimney cape that was built in the late 1700s and has been very well taken care of over the years.
Often, people update old homes to the point that they don’t seem old anymore. They cover up fireplaces, rip out old moldings and trim, and just generally bring everything thing “up to date” so much that you’re only left with an old structure, not an old home.
It can be really hard to find a house that’s this old, that’s still in solid shape, yet,
hasn’t been totally overhauled. But, this one is it! It’s still got original windows and glass in many of the windows. And, it’s even got this killer gigantic fire place that has the baking ovens they used to use in tact, as well as the hook that goes over the fire where people used to hang their cooking pot….there’s two other fireplaces in the house too!
Of course besides people, age and the elements can take their toll on a building this old. This house has had some great luck in that area too! It’s original field
stone foundation is still in tact (actually, even the home inspector who checked out the home when we bought it said it looked fantastic!). Old homes also usually shift a bit over time as the land settles around the. This has happened here too, but, not enough to compromise the structural integrity of the home. Whomever originally built it should be very proud!
When we bought the place 3 years ago, I had never lived in a home this old. I have to say, being me, I was definitely wondering if there might be any resident ghosts we’d meet. But, the home has a lovely vibe, and many folks that have come over remark that it has such a
cozy, friendly feel.
Not only is the home itself special though, but we also love the property the home sits on. It’s got great access to at least 3 different coastal towns, and, the land itself is just beautiful. There are raspberry bushes, apple trees, blueberry bushes, old rock walls, and a great big lawn….oh and a field next door. Not to mention the acres and acres of woods that are behind the home (we don’t own them, but we play in them a LOT!).
We’ll really miss this house. When we bought it we knew we’d sell it in the future. But, it’s been a good place to rest while we look for our more permanent landing spot here in Maine. And while all of us are really excited to get back to living in a Mr. T. built home, I also know we’ll all miss this house and all that it has given us.
