For The Gents

There aren’t nearly as many fiber arts patterns for men as there are for women and children, but, I’m not going to leave the guys out!!  Here are a few online knitting patterns that would be great for any guy!

Fisherman’s Wool Mittens

Fishermen here in Maine work in all kinds of weather.  And, even in the summer, the water they’re reaching into is very cold….even more so during the other seasons of course.

To keep their hands warm, they used to (and some still do) wear wet mittens….yes, wet mittens!  These mittens were made for them, lovingly, by their wives, mothers, and women of the community.  They were really big and made of 2 or 3 ply spun wool, or with 2 strands knitted at once.  As the fisherman got them wet while he was working (they dipped them in the hot water of the radiator and smacked them around a bit, then started working in the salt water) they would felt up and get stiff to the shape of his hand.  These mittens had amazing insulative qualities and kept the fishermen’s hands warm the whole working day.

Now, with this free pattern for Fisherman’s Wet Mittens, you can enjoy the amazing qualities, and timeless beauty of these mittens……They should be soaked in salt water, but you can work on felting them in the washer.  It will take several times though, so be patient.

These are traditionall made in an undyed yarn, but they really be made of any color, just a good felting type of wool.

These are traditionally made in an undyed yarn, but they really be made of any color, just as long as its a good felting type of wool.
