Non-Toxic Cleaning Recipes

Cleaning your home doesn’t have to mean that you replace the dust with chemicals.  You can get your home free of dust and germs with non-toxic ingredients that are affordable and easy to make.

Spray Cleaner – Replaces things like Windex or Clorox Wipes – products you’d use to clean your windows, counters, table tops – you can use it to dust with , clean the TV, that kind of thing.

I generally use 2 parts vinegar, 1 part water with maybe 20 or so drops of Tea Tree Oil thrown into a spray bottle (pick one up at a garden center).  If you want to make it stronger, use a bit more vinegar.

Toilet Cleaner

Pour about 1/2 c baking soda, and 1 c vinegar into the toilet.  Watch it foam and let it sit for a bit (2-5 min).  You can also add some lavender or other essential oil if you’d like.  Then scrub, flush and your bowl will be shiny white and any odors present before will be gone.

Use the above described spray cleaner to clean the rest of the toilet.

Shower/Bath Cleaner

Spray walls, bottom, fixtures, etc with “Spray Cleaner”.  Then, make a paste by putting some baking soda into a plastic container (like an old butter container, or whatever you have) and adding water until you get a thick, paste like consistency.  Now, scrub everything down with this paste.  Spray again with the Spray Cleaner and allow to sit for a min – longer for more stubborn soap scum.  Wash off, dry if you’d like.

Oven Cleaner

Make a paste of baking soda and water as described above in the “Shower Cleaner” recipe.  Scrub the oven down, let the baking soda sit a bit, then wash off.  Repeat as necessary until your oven is nice and shiny.

Grout Cleaner

To clean up your grout on your tiled surfaces, spray everything down and get the surface clean.  Then, make a paste of baking soda and water, and scrub into all of your grout lines.  Spray each line well with your vinegar spray cleaner.  Allow to foam up, then scrub well and wipe dry.

Floor Cleaner

I generally clean my floors with an “Enviro Steamer“, but, if you’re mopping, just use a vinegar water mixture 2 parts vinegar 1 part water.  Add some Dr Bronners (just a splash) for some extra kick and freshening power and/or some EO.
